Abstract

After diversion of their external nutrient loading, eutrophic lakes with a high internal phosphorus release from their sediments may be restored by phosphorus precipitation. Iron or alum compounds are applied to the water to bind and subsequently sediment out phosphorus from the water column. As an example, the successful restoration of Lake Gross-Glienicker (Germany; Berlin/Brandenburg) is described. The injection of iron compounds into the lake (0.68 km2, mean depth 6.5 m) led to a reduction of phosphorus from 0.5 to about 0.03ā€“0.04 mg lāˆ’1. The Secchi depth increased to the extent that the lake has become popular for bathing and has developed submersed vegetation. In general, the biocoenosis of the lake has improved. Boundary conditions for the application of iron (e.g. pH and alkalinity, sulphur compounds, combination with hypolimnetic aeration, hydrology of the lake and its near surroundings) and further measures to increase the quality of the lake are described.
