Adaptive Traffic Load Sharing for GSM Network

Abstract

TCH (traffic channel) congestion is one of the key performance indicators (KPI), which influence the network performance and customer satisfaction in GSM (global system for mobile communication) network. The increase in TCH congestion in the network results in large number of TCH blocking which greatly affects the subscriber satisfaction and revenue of the service provider. The available congestion relief methodologies such as cell splitting, aggressive frequency reuse (AFR) pattern, microcells, and expanding frequency band require time and investment for implementation. An adaptive traffic load sharing model for GSM network is proposed which tunes the radio parameters such as receive signal level access minimum (RXLEV_ACCESS_MIN), cell reselection offset (CRO), and antenna tilt for balancing the traffic between congested and its non-congested neighboring cells. The adaptive tuning of these parameters based on traffic condition would help to reduce the turnaround time in resolving congestion issues.
