Sennosides A and B, the Active Principles of Senna

Abstract

The senna drugs of commerce consist of the leaves and pods of plants of the Cassia species, the main varieties being Cassia angustifolia, obtained from Africa, and C. acutifolia which is cultivated in Southern India. The great importance which senna has attained is due to the fact that it is one of the most reliable laxatives we possess and that, in consequence of this specific property, it has found unusually widespread application.
