Abstract

Acute Achilles tendon ruptures are on the increase and present both in athletes and sedentary patients.

Their treatment is still open for debate: the choice for conservative versus surgical management, the exact operative technique to prefer, or even the best rehabilitation programme or bracing method to choose.

The purpose of this chapter is to give an overview, without recommending a best treatment for each particular patient.

Each patient needs to be informed about the advantages and disadvantages of each technique, and the decision must be taken after an open patient-surgeon discussion.
