Ontology Based Discovery of Semantic Web Services with IRS-III

Abstract

We present the IRS-III approach to Semantic Web Service (SWS) discovery and the evaluation results obtained in the cross-evaluation track of the S3 contest 2009. IRS-III is a SWS broker suited for goal-based invocation of services semantically described using the WSMO conceptual model. The discovery component of the IRS-III broker can match ontological descriptions of Goals, i.e. service requests, against ontological descriptions of service capabilities. The matchmaking algorithm of IRS-III uses the underlying OCML interpreter for reasoning over input and output types and also exploits the meta-level definitions of the service models. As shown in our evaluation results, IRS-III tends to favor precision over recall as expected of most logic-based systems. The results are encouraging considering that IRS-III has been designed within the context of business applications.
