Abstract
This chapter deals with studies of the fauna of the mangrove forest and that of the tidal creeks of the Ajuruteua Peninsula, in Bragança, northern Brazil. The first part is focused on diversity and its spatial distribution and discusses the factors affecting diversity and abundance of the species assemblage. In addition, the impact of the construction of the PA-458 highway on the mangrove polychaete assemblage is evaluated. The construction of the highway clearly affected the diversity and spatial distribution of the local polychaete populations, and constitutes one of the principal anthropogenic impacts recorded in the mangroves of the Brazilian Amazon. Regarding the tidal creeks, settlement of the epibenthic mangrove fauna was compared between different substrates (wood and ceramic panels), substrate orientation (underside and upperside), season (wet and dry) and habitat (tidal channel and mangrove forest). Settlement is basically restricted to the tidal creeks with very little settlement occurring in the mangrove forest itself. Settlement was generally higher on the underside of panels. Long-term monitoring (5 years) showed relatively predictable patterns of settlement in barnacles, oysters, and mussels although there was some interannual seasonal variation. In general, polychaetes dominate the mangrove fauna, whereas filter-feeding crustaceans and bivalves are more abundant in the lower, more frequently flooded, creek habitat. However, the mangrove also has an important terrestrial component and even further diversity may occur in the, as yet, poorly studied epibiont mangrove root assemblage. Finally, greater focus on experimental studies is needed to fully quantify biotic and abiotic interactions of the mangrove fauna.
