Spatial and Temporal Control of Cell Signaling by A-Kinase Anchoring Proteins

Abstract

Scaffolding proteins help maintain order in the face of a chaotic cellular environment. Multifunctional binding proteins such as the A-kinase anchoring proteins (AKAPs) oversee the dynamic organization of signaling events by clustering kinases, phosphatases, phosphodiesterases and other signaling proteins. Many AKAPs facilitate the action of these enzymes toward their downstream targets, while several AKAPs act as downstream effectors themselves. This chapter focuses on the role of AKAPs in the spatial and temporal control of cAMP signaling events.
