Herpes (Pemphigoid) Gestationis

Herpes gestationis (HG), a rare, hormonally mediated, autoimmune disease, is the most clearly defined of the dermatoses of pregnancy [99]. It is characterized by intensely pru-ritic, recurrent, vesiculobullous eruption in all trimesters of pregnancy characterized by destruction of the epidermal basement membrane through deposition of C3 and a special antibody, the “HG factor” [2, 48, 91, 112]. This condition is the most dramatic and serious of pregnancy eruptions [74]. Genes that provide enhanced susceptibility have been identified, but their specific role in pathogenesis has not been defined [95].
