Abstract
This chapter first provides an overview of non-neoplastic disorders and describes the cellular composition of the CSF obtained from patients suffering from these different entities. Emphasis is placed on the lack of specificity of the cellular changes in CSF, with the exception of hemorrhage. Thereafter, the findings of cerebral infarction, hemorrhage, and multiple sclerosis, as well as acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM), a classical example of a demyelinating disease, are presented both cytologically and histologically. Additional quantitative data are also included.
