Abstract

The present Constitution of Azerbaijan entered into force on 27 November 1995. Art 7 defines Azerbaijan as a democratic, secular, unitary Republic. The exclave of Nakchicevan has the status of an Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan. Local self-government is exercised by municipalities (Art 142). Parliament, the Milli Majlis, consists of 125 Deputies (Art 81 to 83). Like members of Parliament, the Head of State, the President of the Republic, is directly elected by the people for the term of five years (Art 101).
