Abstract
For those whose interests include architecture and art history, no tour of old medical Vienna would be complete without a visit to Billroth House in Frankgasse. It is home to the Society of Physicians, which from its inception until present has been a centre of the Viennese Medical School. The Society has owned the building at nr. 8 Frankgasse, in Vienna’s 9th district, since 1893. One strange aspect of the building is the large assembly room, personally designed by Theodor Billroth (1829–1894), which has a total of 21 doors. Billroth ensured that each row of seats led to 2 side doors, which enabled physicians to leave quickly when they had to go to consultations. The 300-seat chamber and gallery displays busts of the society’s prominent physicians and presidents.
