Abstract

The best place to start this tour is at the U6 station Michelbeuern, where a footbridge leads us over to the two enormous towers of the General Hospital (Allgemeines Krankenhaus). The AKH, one of the biggest and most modern hospitals in Europe, was officially opened on 7 June 1994 after years of planning and construction that were riddled with various scandals. The dictum “Saluti et solatio aegrorum” (“To Heal and Comfort the Sick”) above the entrance to the old General Hospital at no. 4 Alser Strasse, also stands at the entrance to the new hospital.
