Review of Magnesium and Metabolic Syndrome

Abstract

With the westernization of lifestyle in people all over the world, especially in advanced countries in recent years, dietary intake of magnesium via grain, barley, seaweed, vegetable, and nuts has remarkably diminished. As a result, people may more easily develop hypomagnesemia. Likewise, metabolic syndrome has been an increasing problem for health, probably resulting from various causes such as increased intake of animal fat, exercise insufficiency, and accumulation of various stresses. Metabolic syndrome is often complicated with obesity, hypertension, hyperglycemia, and hyperlipidemia, and thus people with the syndrome may be susceptible to cardiovascular events. Hypomagnesemia may cause an increase of vascular tonus by intracellular magnesium depletion, resulting in an increase of blood pressure. Furthermore, it might cause impaired insulin secretion, insulin resistance, and hyperlipidemia, and finally lead to the development of metabolic syndrome. Therefore, the importance of magnesium intake for the maintenance of health should be recognized.
