Abstract
The relationship between anesthesiologists and otolaryngologists dates back to the beginnings of modern anesthetic practice. Indeed, the earliest use of inhaled anesthetics was for head and neck and intraoral procedures. The first public demonstration of ether anesthesia in 1846 was administered for the excision of a vascular neck lesion. This monumental event was later memorialized (the Bullfinch amphitheater of the Massachusetts General Hospital was renamed the “Ether Dome”) and recognized as America’s greatest contribution to nineteenth century medicine.
