Abstract
Hand-assisted laparoscopic surgery (HALS) was first described in the 1990s. A variety of techniques allow the surgeon to insert the gloved nondominant hand into the abdomen to assist in retraction. The technique is used less commonly than in the past decade. It remains useful for procedures for laparoscopic donor nephrectomy, where the specimen must be removed intact in an atraumatic fashion. For most other procedures, emphasis on smaller incisions and single-incision techniques has taken precedence.
