Abstract
Embryology, as a clinical laboratory activity, had no practical relevance to reproductive medicine before the late 1970s, when in vitro fertilisation (IVF) and embryo transfer were introduced to treat tubal infertility. Nowadays, the embryology laboratory is each IVF centre’s linchpin, and the scientist in charge of it carries responsibilities that crucially affect the patient’s wellbeing and the outcome of treatment.
