Abstract
In this chapter we present the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations for a fluid of constant density, in several forms that will be useful later. In particular, the vorticity and vortex magnetization are introduced, and a first discussion of spectral variables is given. Useful results whose proofs are available in elementary textbooks1 will be merely stated.
