Abstract

Overweight and obesity in most countries of Europe show rising secular trends and are predicted to continue rising if counteracting measures are not taken (Wan et al. 2007). In the European Union, the number of children who are overweight is expected to rise by 1.3 million children per year, with more than 300,000 of them becoming obese each year (Kosti and Panagiotakos 2006). Obesity is a multifactorial disease with a complex etiology.
