Abstract

Prior to the year 1960, the available tools for understanding the effects of nonnormality on conventional hypothesis testing methods were rather lim- ited. Studies prior to the year 1960 seemed to suggest that nonnormality is not an issue when the goal is to make inferences about population means. But starting in the year 1960, a series of insights made it clear that finding improved methods is critical to those trying to understand data. Many such methods have been developed. The more basic techniques are described in Part II of this book.
