The integral calculus is much older than the differential calculus, because the computation of lengths, areas, and volumes occupied the greatest mathematicians since antiquity: Archimedes, Kepler, Cavalieri, Barrow. The decisive breakthrough came when Newton and Leibniz discovered that integration is the inverse operation of differentiation, thus reducing much effort to a couple of differentiation rules.
