Abstract
In the first chapter, I discussed some of medicine’s heroes and their exploits. Now we will examine the villains—the diseases that afflict humankind, the maladies that despite our best efforts seem to reemerge just when we are about to declare victory. These diseases have influenced our history, geography, culture, religion, and language.
