Abstract
The dissertation upon which this book is based was completed in 1995. Efforts toward more capable autonomous virtual characters have continued in the interim. Recent research on this topic has addressed several of the issues discussed in Chapter 10. Especially worthy of attention are two recent doctoral dissertations,the first from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, authored by Bruce Blumberg [127],an d the second from the University of Toronto,au thored by John Funge [128]. The research efforts documented by these dissertations have advanced behavioral animation and artificial life to an exciting new level.
