Special Issue: Maritime Archaeology of World War II and the Cold War

The largest global conflict in human history ended eight decades ago, but a decades-long undeclared conflict, the Cold War, continued in an era that introduced nuclear weapons, and extended the frontiers of conflict to all oceans and into both outer and cyber space. The archaeological remnants of these wars include altered landscapes, formerly hidden subsea infrastructure, shipwrecks and downed aircraft. The technologies of the Cold War also extended human reach into the deepest parts of the ocean. This volume explores the sites of both conflicts in both the deep ocean as well as the questions of archaeological relevance, and the conflicting values, and the legacies that these archeological sites both face and pose in regard to marine pollution, war graves, memorials, and as targets for scrap.
