Engineering: State of the Art on Autonomous Robot Systems and Competitions

Autonomous robotics has seen its popularity and applications in distinct fields, namely in services and industry, increasing significantly in the last two decades. Several areas related with robotics and its support technologies have been addressed by the academic community, and competitions have been organized around the world as a means of advancing the state of the art on these topics. Given this scientific environment, journals and conferences emerged to broadly disseminate the developed knowledge. The IEEE International Conference on Autonomous Robot Systems and Competitions (ICARSC) gathers participants from academia and industry working in the field of autonomous robot systems and related areas. It is organized since 2001 in parallel to the Portuguese Robotics Open, and aims at exploring and discussing the latest trends in research and technology in the fields of robotics and related areas. Therefore, this Topical Collection of the SN Applied Sciences presents the state of the art on autonomous robots and its support technologies, as peer reviewed contributions from theory, to prototyping, to final product development, that were presented at the ICARSC’2020 – The 20th IEEE International Conference on Autonomous Robot Systems and Competitions, the scientific meeting of the Portuguese Robotics Open.
