This special issue focuses on new – mainly quantitative - approaches to resilience and resilience-related concepts in relation to sustainability, development, and spatial planning on a range of different scales. This collection brings together 12 papers which provide theoretical and empirical research results on the nature, principles and effects of spatial/regional/urban resilience on connecting and interconnecting the territorial dimension of resilience with development patterns.

The themes and approaches included in the special issue are both wide-ranging and convergent, all revolving around the multifaceted concept of resilience from a spatial and sustainability perspective, which ensures a clear coherence throughout. This special issue features five major constituents which shape the cornerstones of this publication, viz. (i) regional-economic and labour market studies; (ii) studies on critical infrastructure and spatial accessibility; (iii) institutional response studies (e.g. in a corona context); (iv) spatial-statistical studies; and (v) bibliometric overviews.
