Accuracy of historical theories on development and their influence on today’s views of the field

The topical collection will build on the history of the journal which dates back to the late 19th century by looking back at influential developmental biologists who have published in DGE. Driesch, Mangold, Spemann, and Wilhelm Roux, for example, published their landmark papers in the journal. They addressed fundamental questions in developmental biology ranging from cell fate specification to regeneration and environmental influences on development. But how accurate were their conclusions and theories? How did their ideas develop over the last 50 to 100 years and how did they influence today’s research and views? The topical collection will bring together reviews that discuss historical theories on development and evolution based predominantly on DGE publications.
