Acute heart failure

Acute heart failure is one of the leading causes of hospitalization in the world and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. These numbers reflect the challenges that are associated with the treatment of acute heart failure. There are currently limited treatment options and a great number of acute heart failure patients display insufficient response to the only guideline recommended therapy, i.e. loop diuretics. Additionally, both the assessment of congestion, as well as the monitoring of response to treatment and escalation of therapy pose individual challenges and high quality evidence or data is lacking. Therefore there is a great need for better markers to assess (de)congestion, measures of response and personalized treatment approaches in acute heart failure patients. We welcome both clinical and preclinical submissions that address these urgent issues.

Jozine ter Maaten, MD, PhD, is a cardiologist at the University Medical Center Groningen, the Netherlands, and is an associate editor for JCTR. Her clinical interests are heart failure with a specific focus on advanced heart failure, acute cardiac care, and pulmonary hypertension including exercise right heart catheterizations. Her research focuses on acute heart failure where she aims to improve assessment of congestion, identify specific congestion phenotypes, and study novel treatment approaches for acute heart failure moving towards a personalized approach as the current one size fits all approach falls short in a great number of patients
