Abstract

Indoor air quality (IAQ) is of paramount importance in ensuring the health and comfort of occupants. Lack of daylight, poor ventilation, excessive noise, or noxious compounds emitted from building materials can have lasting consequences on health and may result in allergies, stress, and/or the transmission of communicable diseases. Comfort is a complex issue affected by factors such as type of activity, clothing, age, and gender as well as air temperature, air movement, radiant temperature, humidity, noise, light, and odors. This chapter examines these aspects and suggests alternative design strategies and products that can reduce harmful emissions while ameliorating comfort.
