Abstract
Mexico came into the twenty-first century with one of the world’s most open economies and trade agreements that include 44 nations (Villarreal 2010). Mexico’s powerful economy consistently places it in the top 20 world ranking for largest gross domestic product. The population is about 110 million yet about half of Mexico’s people live in extreme poverty, not even participating in the formal economy. The ranking for entrepreneurial activities is high (www.gemconsortium.org), while the ranking for ease of doing business is steadily improving (Doing Business in Mexico 2011). What drives entrepreneurship in these conditions? What are the resources entrepreneurs leverage to succeed here?
