Sherlock Holmes
When Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson first met, Holmes astonished Watson by observing that Watson had recently been in Afghanistan. As Holmes later explained, he deduced this by putting together bits of evidence: Watson had been an army doctor because he appeared to be a medical type but had the air of a military man; he had been in the tropics because his face was darkened while his wrists were fair; his left arm was injured; and his haggard looks showed that he had undergone hardship and sickness. Ergo, Watson had been in the Afghan wars.
