Abstract
There is today no question that coherent structures exist in wall bounded turbulent shear flow. This is well documented by numerous publications in the last ten to fifteen years. A digital computer was used by applying simple criteria to recognize, extract and ensemble average coherent structures which repeatedly appeared in the mean stream component, u, of a turbulent channel flow. Simultaneously the two other velocity components, v and w, as well as the product uv and various vorticity components were also processed without applying any criteria on these signals. The results obtained provide insight into the structure of turbulence. Using simultaneously two probes at different locations our pattern recognition technique also provides additional information about the spacial extension of the coherent structures.
