Abstract
The purpose of this chapter is to look at specific examples of tasks and applications that are suitable to stimulate mathematical thinking and enhance mathematical understanding at this level.For the purposes of this book,the junior primary years are defined as being years one to four,typically children aged five to eight years old.The New Zealand Curriculum (NZC) (Ministry of Education,2007) offers a content and pedagogical frame that encourages schools to recognise and incorporate their particular community within their school curriculum.
