Molecular Diagnosis of Aeromonas Salmonicida Infections

  • Chapter
Book cover Molecular Diagnosis of Salmonid Diseases

Abstract

Aeromonas salmonicida, one of the few non-motile members of the genus Aeromonas, within the family Aeromonadacea, has a global distribution and comprises several sub-species, which for practical purposes may be separated both biochemically and genotypically into two major groups. While the first group contains Aeromonas salmonicida subsp. salmonicida as its sole member, the remaining subspecies make up the second group. Despite the fact that group 2 contains several species possessing valid names, the precise taxonomic position of each and the interrelationships between members of this group, despite extensive investigation, remains unresolved. These isolates are most often therefore simply referred to as atypical A. salmonicida.
