Abstract

The forests of Indonesia are recognised both nationally and internationally for their biological richness. They also represent an important natural resource, which has made a major contribution to the economic development of the country over the past twenty years. Concern has been expressed in many quarters that the area of forest is being rapidly depleted, and that this many lead to the loss of potentially valuable species of plants and animals, adverse environmental consequences, and a depletion of the resource base of commercial timbers to support the forest industry.
