The Adjective “Vieux”: The Point of View of “Generative Lexicon”

Part of the book series: Text, Speech and Language Technology ((TLTB,volume 10))

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to present a treatment of adjectival polymorphism in the semi-polymorphic framework of Generative Lexicon (Pustejovsky, 1995; Bouillon, 1998; Busa, 1996). Taking as an example the adjective vieux in French (“old”), the work shows on the one hand that the different senses of the adjective cannot be enumerated and on the other that its polymorphism is not infinite (Stati, 1979; Lahav, 1989). In particular, it can be predicted given adequate tools, namely rich typed representations for adjectives and nouns (i.e. qualia structures) and mechanisms to compose them.
