Evaluation of Environmental Costs of SO2 Emissions Using Stochastic Images

  • Conference paper

Part of the book series: Quantitative Geology and Geostatistics ((QGAG,volume 10))

Abstract

This study presents a methodology to evaluate the environmental costs of multi-source pollutant emissions in the Setubal Peninsula (southern Portugal). Assessment of the uncertainty related to SO2 emissions is achieved by indicator formalism using a soft image of plume dispersion as secondary information. Probability Field Simulation is applied to obtain a set of equi-probable images of spatial plumes dispersion. These different realisations are used to evaluate environmental impact costs. A final model of average costs and risk area maps of exceeding a given threshold are produced by using stochastic images and considering that different land uses of the peninsula — agriculture, urban area, marsh and protected natural area — have distinct environmental costs.
