The Use of Tagging

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Text, Speech and Language Technology ((TLTB,volume 9))

Abstract

Wordclass tagging is the most popular and well-established kind of linguistic annotation to be applied to text, for two reasons.1 Firstly, automatic taggers are a well researched and well understood type of software (cf. Chapter 2) and it is possible to tag large amounts of text to a reasonably high degree of accuracy. Secondly, wordclass tagging is generally considered to be a useful first stage annotation applied to text as a preliminary to other activities in natural language processing (NLP).
