Structure and Function Studies of the LH1 (B880) Antenna Complex of the Purple Bacterium Rhodobium marinum

Abstract

Most species of photosynthetic bacteria contain two major types of antenna complex. The LH1 or B880 complex (so designated according to the λ max of the near-infrared absorption band) surrounds the RC to form the ‘core’ (LH1-RC) complex, while the other (LH2 or B800-850/820), which is present in variable amounts, forms a peripheral network of pigment-protein complexes that surround and connect the core complexes [1]. Some species of purple bacteria like Rhodospirillum (Rs.) rubrum, Rhodopseudomonas (Rps.) viridis and Rhodobium (Rh.) marinum contain LH1 as the only antenna complex [2].
