Abstract
Swedish society has undergone great changes over the past few centuries. These are characterized by a considerable increase in population, industrialization and urbanization as well as the modernization of agriculture and forestry and the establishment of a modern welfare society. Such development trends were accompanied by major increases in mobility and energy consumption. They have resulted in fundamental changes in the use of natural resources and intensified the impact of man on the environment. The development of national and international markets, national policies and pollution also have an increasing influence on the landscape.
