Abstract
All ecosystems are ultimately the products of exogenous forces of climate and geology, including insolation, temperature and precipitation regimes, wind, overland and groundwater flow and nutrient input. These forces can be termed driving forces. They are all at least partly physical in character, but most are strongly influenced by biological structures and processes.
