Abstract

Organochlorines and hydrocarbons are addressed together in this chapter, as their cycling through aquatic ecosystems is broadly similar and many of the issues related to the use of biomonitors to quantify these contaminants are shared, at least to some degree (see Connell, 1988). The following text emphasises data for organochlorines and biomonitoring, as rather more information exists for these compounds than for hydrocarbons. Where relevant, however, discussion is provided on the distinctions between the two classes of contaminants and their quantification through the analysis of biomonitors.
