Abstract
I record here what little I know about the remarkable, widely ramified Wittgenstein family because it may give a more intimate understanding of the milieu in which the philosopher grew up than do those of his biographies that have come to my attention. These biographies stress that Ludwig Wittgenstein came from a rich Jewish family in Vienna. This emphasis is liable to portray an incorrect picture. I knew quite a number of wealthy people belonging to the cutural élite of Vienna; and in so far as there were differences between Jewish and non-Jewish families I must say that the part of the Wittgenstein family that I knew resembled the latter.
