Abstract

Recent decades have witnessed an increased interest in the cross-cultural study of mental disorders. This interest has manifested itself across a variety of disciplines and has served as an impetus for the development of a number of subdisciplinary specialities which have been variously termed vergleichende psychiatrie or comparative psychiatry (Kraepelin 1904), primitive psychiatry (Devereux 1940), culture and psychopathology (Slotkin 1955), ethnopsychiatry (Devereux 1961), transcultural psychiatry (Wittkower and Rin 1965), cross-cultural psychiatry (Murphy and Leighton 1965), psychiatric sociology (Weinberg 1967), cultural psychiatry (Kennedy 1973), and the “new” transcultural psychiatry (Kleinman 1977).
