Ocular Findings at Onset of Uremia

Abstract

The parallel demise of the eye and the kidney remains a serious consequence of long-standing diabetes mellitus (DM). While various studies have reported on the comorbidity of diabetic retinopathy and diabetic nephropathy, few have examined the extent of ocular disease at the onset of uremia. Earlier estimates of diabetic retinopathy in 97%, and visual impairment in 50% of uremic diabetics [1] have been confirmed more recently [2].
