Russian Approaches to Classification of Vegetation

Classification of Plant Communities

Part of the book series: Classification of Plant Communities ((HAVS,volume 5-1))

Abstract

The first suggestions of classifying vegetation in Russia can be found in works of early naturalists (Tatishchev 1740, see Tatishchev 1950, Krasheninnikov 1755, Engelmann 1810, and others) and in papers by travelers-geographers and floristic botanists of the middle of the XIX century (Ruprecht 1845, Trautvetter 1849–1851, Borshchev 1865, Middendorf 1867, and others). Typological characteristics of vegetation were considered at that time in only a fragmentary manner, and usually in connection with floristic and general description of particular regions. Appearance of investigations which focused special attention upon geobotanical classification dates back to the 1880’s when these problems were recognized primarily in two areas-forest typology and studies of steppe vegetation.
