Abstract
Salt is important in the manufacture of chlorine, caustic soda and soda ash. It is obtained from several sources, an important one being solar saltfields. ICI Australia has two such fields and another planned. The larger field is at Dry Creek, South Australia, the other at Pt. Alma, Queensland. A third field is planned to operate at Lake Tyrell, Victoria. This paper briefly describes the two operational fields, and discusses some experiments designed to aid their management. The experiments were concerned with particular biological events which may affect efficiency and productivity in solar saltfields.
