Abstract
In its Instruction Donum Vitae of 1987,1 the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith offered “replies to certain questions” concerning interventions in human procreation, passed over other questions in silence, and, in concluding, called upon moralists to reflect deeply on the relevant teachings of the magisterium. In the years immediately following, a number of articles and scholarly volumes2 responded, in one way or another, to the Instruction’s call. However, important issues remain unresolved and/or require further clarification - even among those who accept Donum Vitae’s fundamental teachings. The present study treats one set of such issues, related to the moral acceptability of a range of interventions upon human gametes.
