Abstract

David Keyt is a widely acknowledged master in applying the techniques of modern analytic philosophy to the interpretation, explication, and criticism of ancient texts. In this intellectual memoir he recounts his experiences during the rise of analytic classical scholarship and offers entertaining and illuminating anecdotes involving many major philosophers and classical scholars. He describes his education at Kenyon College and Cornell University and his subsequent career in the academy including a professorship at the University of Washington which spanned more than a half century. In an overview of his own published scholarship, he describes the development of his interpretative method and his most important insights into the philosophies of Plato and Aristotle.

Acknowledgments

I’m much indebted for the encouragement and suggestions that I received on various aspects of this memoir from Larry Bonjour, Kenneth Clatterbaugh, Robert Coburn, Marc Cohen, Charles Marks, Fred Miller, Jerry Santas, and Bangs Tapscott. I’m especially grateful for the trenchant criticism of my son Aaron and my wife Christine, who were undaunted by the frowns, sighs, and protests their comments invariably elicited.
