Abstract

Guatemala has three main types of early care and education services, including programs operated by: (a) the Ministry of Education, (b) the Secretaria of Social Well-Being-Presidency of the Republic, and private programs. Each type of program is discussed to provide a basic understanding of early childhood services. Professional development successes and challenges for administrators, teachers, and nineras who share the responsibilities for implementing services across all three types of early childhood programs are described next. Survey results from approximately 110 participants who attended a professional development in 2005 in Guatemala City highlight the types of information learned and continued challenges.
