Practical Science Activities in Primary Schools in Malaysia

Abstract

Practical experiences are an essential part of learning science. The Malaysian primary science curriculum aims at producing active learners and developing pupils’ interest and creativity through everyday experiences and investigations that promote the acquisition of scientific and thinking skills, as well as the inculcation of scientific attitudes and values. Manipulative skills in scientific investigations involve using and handling science apparatus and substances, handling specimens, drawing specimens and apparatus, and cleaning and storing science apparatus. To this end, pupils need to be given ample opportunities to engage in scientific investigations through hands-on activities and experimentation. However, these experiences are not provided in the majority of primary schools in Malaysia. There are several reasons for this: cost, safety, waste disposal, and teacher preparation. This chapter will report on the status and problems related to primary-level science practical activities through a survey conducted with primary school teachers teaching science. The feasibilities of using a microscience approach for the primary level will also be discussed.
